Call for artwork!

Four and Twenty is now accepting artwork submissions for the 2010 volume of the journal. As with the poems we publish, we are open to an array of themes. We are partial to illustrations, but will also consider photos. Artwork chosen for the journal will be used for both cover and interior purposes.

Artists may submit up to three pieces of art. All submissions must be sent electronically to 4and20@declarationediting.com. All files should have a minimum quality of 300 dpi. Please submit files in one of the following formats: TIFF, JPEG, PNG, EPS, or PDF. Please do not submit native Photoshop or Illustrator files.

All artwork submissions must be received by December 31, 2009.

All artwork is subject to the same rights agreement as the poetry we publish. For more information on rights and permissions, please visit 4and20poetry.com.

Four and Twenty is published for a general audience of poetry lovers, so out of deference to our younger readers (and their parents) we ask for no erotic images.

A cappella Zoo is a print journal & ezine of magical realist and experimental writing from around the world. We will be open to new submissions for Issue 4 between November 1 and December 31, 2009. We look for memorable writing (prose, poetry, drama, and beyond) and especially love to read full, carefully developed stories. Limit: 7500 words (query for longer) or up to 3 poems or flash fictions. Simultaneous submissions and reprints accepted. Our issues are published simultaneously in print and online. We obtain first North American serial rights, one-time rights, and/or the non-exclusive right to archive online. Send your announcement in the body of an e-mail (no attachments) to declare@declarationediting.com. Your announcement should be no longer than 300 words. Please do not include images in your e-mail.
Include all the basic submission information needed: name of publication, type of literature published, basic contact email or address, deadline, cost, etc.
Make sure there are no errors in your announcement. We post all announcements as-is. They will not be proofread by our staff.

Presently, we post submission calls only for Northwest publications based in Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Alaska, or British Columbia.

The deadline to post your announcement in the next round of submission calls is November 9.

All submissions must be received no later than 5:00 PM the Monday before posting.

Featured Literary Journal: Scawy Monstur

Scawy Monstur is based in Portland, Oregon and focuses on short fiction and photography. The journal likes to publish both established and new writers, and states on the website, “We believe in the notion that a truly creative vision can not be shrink wrapped or packaged. We strive to produce work that stays with you and keeps you guessing.” The journal does not seem to have any specific subjects or themes that the editors prefer, as the webpage also says, “Anything goes with Scawy Monstur. As long as it is good.” Scawy Monstur accepts submissions for both a seasonal journal, and posts for their website.

Submissions
Scawy Monstur is now accepting submissions for the Winter Issue and their website. They are looking for short stories under 1500 words, non fiction under 200 words, and poetry. In terms of art, they are accepting anything but prefer woodcuts, photography, paintings, and carvings. The submissions should be sent by email (either as attachments or embedded in the email) to mrmonstur@scawymonstur.com. Four and Twenty

Declaration Editing & Design is accepting submissions for the December 2009 issue of Four and Twenty, our short form poetry journal.

The guidelines are simple. All poems must be four lines or fewer in length and contain no more than twenty words (hence, Four and Twenty). All submissions are judged on the ability to create a vivid picture, evoke an emotional response, and use creative wordplay. All poetic forms that fit the journal’s guidelines (such as haiku, senryu, sapphic, and tanaga) are welcome, but authors are not limited to these forms. There is no set theme for the journal. A new issue of the journal is released the third Tuesday of each month.

Featured Literary Journal: The Seattle Review

The Seattle Review was founded in 1977, and is now published twice a year. It contains fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and visual art from writers and artists all over the world. This well-known, well-established Review is printed in full color, perfect bound.

The Seattle Review also sponsors several writing contests. With four editors, the magazine has traditionally also invited a fiction writer to serve as a fiction editor for every issue. Their mission statements says, “Throughout our history and our growth, we have kept our faith in the common and uncommon word. We invite you to share that faith.”

Submissions:

The Seattle Review only accepts submissions between Oct. 1 and May 31st. They do not allow simultaneous submissions, and ask that authors please include a SASE. All submissions should be sent by mail to the following address:

Announcing the release of The 2009 S4C Spotlight, presented by Declaration Editing & Design. To download your free copy, visit www.declarationS4C.wordpress.com.

During the month of July, writers are challenged by Declaration Editing & Design to tell original serialized stories in nine to twelve installments, with each installment being fewer than five hundred words. We call this challenge The Super-Short Summer Serial Challenge (S4C). S4C participants post story installments to their personal websites or blogs throughout July. Once they have completed the challenge, they can submit their final stories for consideration as one of five serials featured in The S4C Spotlight.

The 2009 S4C Spotlight features the following five stories:
